Counter Platform: Linux (could probably be modified to run under the MacOS with MacPerl) Application Type: Perl Script Cost: “PearWare” Description: This is a very simple counter, which can be configured in any one of three ways: Page counts show up on each page, plus a page can be set up to show current counts on all pages with counters Page counts do not display, but only show up on a page that lists all the current counts Page counts display on all pages, with no separate “master” page for all counters This script is designed for and has been tested under Linux. (Our testing machine is running Slackware Linux ’96 with Perl 5 on an Intel 386 CPU.) It could probably be easily modified to run on a Macintosh with MacPerl as well. It could likely be modified to run on a Windows machine as well, but we haven’t tried it. Configuration: Configuration is relatively painless. Place the scripts in your cgi-bin directory, create a directory for the scripts to store their data files in (please make sure that your script will have “write” permission to the directory you create), then fill in the appropriate values in the scripts using a text editor. You will find a note inside each script explaining what values you need to edit. Download: The Files This counter consists of two scripts, and an example.shtml file that shows how to reference your script from within your web page(s). The first file is the count.pl script. This is the script that will actually keep track of the counts for each web page. The second file is the showcount.pl script. This is the script to use if you want to display all of your page counts on a single web page for quick referencing. The third file is the example.shtml file. This is the sample page to show you how to implement the counter scripts into your web page. It can also be used to verify that your scripts are working.
